Nurses are very crucial in the health field, yet, despite that,  some high school graduates have no financial means to enter college and take nursing courses. Even those who are already employed and want to change their careers to become nurses may not be able to afford further education, and may benefit from scholarships for students. While some other health workers that wish to take advance courses to become nurses are not able to, due lack of financial resources. These Scholarships for nursing can be either merit-based, need-based or in a specific service criteria.

  1. Merit-based scholarships are given by a college or university or private foundations. These scholarships require applicants to write an essay and undergo an interview with the scholarship committee who screen applicants and select those eligible to receive the scholarship. They are evaluated based on their academic performance, community service and their future goals.
  2. Need-based scholarships for nursing are granted for those individuals with physical disability or with ethnic backgrounds that are financially incapable. Applicants are required to present some financial documents such as tax return documents as proof of being eligible to avail of the scholarship grant.
  3. Obligatory-service scholarships are given by the government. The government also has scholarships for nursing in the National Health Service Corps and Veterans Affairs Health Careers. Also, the National Health Service Corps give students the opportunity to serve in needy locations in return for the financial support granted while pursuing the course.

If you want to apply for scholarships for nursing, you should start applying from the lesser known to the well-known scholarship grants. Applicants’ number for any scholarship varies greatly. Some scholarship programs have abundance of applicants while some have less. Making a list (hopefully we will post these as we find more) of all the different scholarship opportunities and then applying to all is probably the best way to hedge your bet in favor of getting some funding.
